Solar Panel Recycling Moves Into the Big League

Comstock Metals starts up its industry-scale facility, bringing new momentum to the circular solar economy

Silver Springs, Nevada, 12 August 2026 – Solar power has expanded rapidly, but the industry now faces another challenge: what happens when solar panels reach the end of their useful life? Comstock Metals is taking a major step toward addressing that question with the full integration and start-up of its industry-scale solar panel recycling facility in Nevada.

Comstock Inc. and its subsidiary, Comstock Metals, announced that the recycling system has been fully integrated, tested, and started up. The facility is designed to process up to 100,000 tons of end-of-life solar panels each year, marking a significant move from smaller-scale recycling toward industrial production.

Solar panels contain valuable materials that can potentially be recovered and reused instead of being sent to landfills. As the number of older photovoltaic panels increases, recycling can become an important part of managing solar equipment at the end of its service life.

Comstock Metals has developed a process designed to recover materials from discarded solar panels. The company describes its approach as a zero landfill solution, to separate and recover useful materials for further use.

The new facility brings several stages of the recycling process together into one industrial operation. Earlier commissioning work included robotic loading systems, glass upgrading equipment, and washing systems. These systems have been integrated and tested as part of the wider production line.

The facility has been designed with an annual processing capacity of approximately 100,000 tons of solar panel materials. The company is now moving from equipment testing and staged commissioning toward continuous production.

Comstock has indicated that its first production milestone will involve continuous operation at 25 percent of the facility’s rated capacity. The company is also preparing its operating teams for a 24-hour, seven-day schedule using rotating shifts as production increases.

The scale of the facility is important because solar panel recycling needs to keep pace with the growing volume of panels being retired. A larger processing operation can help create a more organized pathway for collecting, transporting, processing, and recovering materials from old panels.

The development also reflects the growing importance of the circular economy within renewable energy. Instead of viewing an old solar panel simply as waste, recycling allows manufacturers and recyclers to recover materials that can potentially return to the supply chain.

Comstock Metals is also building a broader recycling network. In June, the company announced plans for an additional facility in Cambridge, Ohio, designed to support collection, processing, and logistics across the Midwest. The company has also entered into a recycling services agreement with Illuminate USA to handle solar panel manufacturing materials from its Ohio operations.

The start-up of Comstock Metals’ industry-scale facility highlights how solar energy is developing beyond power generation. Recycling, material recovery, and responsible end-of-life management are becoming increasingly important parts of the solar industry’s long-term growth.

As production increases, the facility could provide a larger-scale solution for recovering valuable materials from retired solar panels while reducing the amount of photovoltaic waste sent to landfills. For the renewable energy sector, this represents another step toward building a more circular and resource-efficient solar supply chain.
